The 12/8 rhythm is often referred to as a slow blues beat but has many other exciting applications at varying tempos. Some of the genres that use these beats include Rock, Jazz, Country, Pop and Reggae. The time signature determines how many beats in a measure and what type of note receives a count. In the 12/8 time signature you would count 12 eight notes in a measure. The 12/8 rhythm typically has a nice flowing quality and is frequently dived into three note phrases. The best way to practice this course is to learn each lesson thoroughly before advancing to the next video. Practice slowly at first while maintaining strict tempo before increasing speed. Make sure to count out loud, this will take the edge off the coordination and reinforce the timing. When learning the 12/8 rhythms be sure and count all the notes 1-12 before breaking it down and counting in groups of three 1,2,3 - 1,2,3 etc. All lessons are in progressive order and best results will be obtained by practicing the lessons in the order they are listed. At the end of each practice session try playing some of the exercises by memory and improvise by combining beats and fills together. Most of all, have fun with these great sounding beats and fills.
