More about this course

Experience the magic of a first snowfall in Moscow by drawing and painting this scene together!

In this class, you'll learn how to draw and paint this beautiful first snow scene in Moscow, Russia. By the end of this class, you'll feel more confident in being able to simplify down complex buildings such as St Basil's Cathedral into simple yet convincing representations. You will gain knowledge and practical experience that will help to loosen up your drawings and paintings. In addition, I'll show you how to add your own personal touch to transform any reference photo into a unique piece of art.

This class is for beginners to intermediate learners and includes separate comprehensive drawing and painting lessons to help you understand and apply the entire process of creating this scene. All of the techniques and process can be applied to any other reference picture.

Topics covered:

  • What materials you will need, and what pens work best for drawing and sketching.
  • How to plan your illustration and painting through understanding basic compositional elements and placement of objects, color and figures.
  • How to make simple, intuitive measurements to convert an photograph into an ink and watercolor illustration/painting.
  • How to draw accurately and loosely with a pen.
  • How to use watercolor paint to add light and dark areas to a painting and to set the mood of your painting.

The course project

For the class project, refer to the drawing and painting lessons as well as the reference photos attached below.

Take your time sketching this scene and and remember to look at buildings and features to try to reduce them down into simple shapes first. Once you've done that, you can then build up more detail and add colour.

If you're feeling adventurous, try to change the composition such as the positions of the figures or colours and tones of the sky depending on the time of the day you would like to portray. Finally upload your project to the class! I'd love to see what you come up and to provide some additional tips and advice.
